About Me

Hi, I’m Emily and I am a freelance museum access consultant. I specialise in supporting museums, galleries, heritage sites and the wider cultural sector more accessible for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people.

I have worked within museums for over 10 years in a variety of roles, predominantly in museum education. Prior to setting up Emily: Autism and Me in 2021, I also trained as a primary school teacher as well as working within mental health and autism charities.

When I received my own autism diagnosis in 2020, I wanted to change the narrative of what it meant to be autistic. I had completed training on autism many times but didn’t relate to the information in it. None of the training was being delivered by someone with lived experience so I wanted to change that. Everything I now do is delivered from the lived experience perspective.

Since then I have worked across sectors includes museums, universities, charities, the NHS and the Police.

What I realised was that something that wasn’t being talked about enough was the accessibility of spaces for autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people. This is why over the years my focus has changed to accessibility specifically within the museum and heritage sector.
